Uluslararası ilişkilerde kutuplaşma, iktidarın uluslararası sistem içinde dağıtıldığı çeşitli yollardan herhangi biridir. Belirli bir zaman diliminde uluslararası sistemin niteliğini tanımlar. Birincisi genellikle dört sistem tipini birbirinden ayırır: dört veya daha fazla güç merkezi için tek kutuplu, iki kutuplu, üç kutuplu ve çok kutuplu. Sistemin türü, bir bölgedeki veya tüm dünyadaki güç dağılımı ve devletlerin etkisine tamamen bağımlıdır.
