Adlarından sayısız bacakları olduğu söylenmesine rağmen, bayan ayakları 750'den fazla bacağa sahip olmaktan on bedenden daha azına kadar değişir. Miyolopodların fosil kayıtları, geç Silüriyalıya kadar uzanır, ancak moleküler kanıtlar Kambriyen Dönem'de bir çeşitlendirme imkânı sunmaktadır ve Körfez fosilleri hayvancılık bölgelerine benzemektedir. En eski kesin apolife fosili, geç Silüriyen'den gelen, değirmen yayan Pneumodesmus newmani'dir. P. newmani, en bilinen karasal hayvan olarak da önemlidir. Çatlakların filogenetik sınıflandırılması halen tartışılmaktadır. Mikorapodların bilimsel çalışması, miyopodolojidir ve mikropodlarını araştıranlar miyapodologlardır.
