Yakın Doğu, kabaca Batı Asya'yı kuşatan coğrafi bir terimdir. Farklı akademik çevrelerde farklı tanımlara sahip olmasına rağmen, bu terim başlangıçta Osmanlı İmparatorluğunun azami ölçüde uygulanmıştı, ancak o zamandan beri giderek Ortadoğu terimi kullanılıyordu. Encyclopædia Britannica, Yakın Doğu'yu Bahreyn, Kıbrıs, Mısır, Gazze Şeridi, İran, Irak, Filistin, İsrail, Ürdün, Kuveyt, Lübnan, Libya, Umman, Katar, Suudi Arabistan, Sudan, Suriye, Türkiye, Birleşik Krallık'ı dahil olarak tanımlıyor. Arap Emirlikleri, Batı Şeria ve Yemen. Birleşmiş Milletler FAO, bölgeyi benzer şekilde tanımlıyor ancak Kuzey Afrika ve Filistin topraklarını dışlarken Afganistan'ı da içeriyor. National Geographic'e göre, Yakın Doğu ve Orta Doğu terimleri aynı bölgelere işaret ediyor ve genel olarak Arap Yarımadası, Kıbrıs, Mısır, Irak, İran, İsrail, Ürdün, Lübnan, Filistin topraklarından, Suriye'den oluşan ülkeler olarak kabul ediliyor ve Türkiye'.

Near East is a geographical term that roughly encompasses Western Asia. Despite having varying definitions within different academic circles, the term was originally applied to the maximum extent of the Ottoman Empire, but has since been gradually replaced by the term Middle East. The Encyclopædia Britannica defines the Near East as including Bahrain, Cyprus, Egypt, the Gaza Strip, Iran, Iraq, Palestine, Israel, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the West Bank, and Yemen. The United Nations FAO defines the region similarly, but also includes Afghanistan while excluding the countries of North Africa and the Palestinian territories. According to National Geographic, the terms Near East and Middle East denote the same territories and are 'generally accepted as comprising the countries of the Arabian Peninsula, Cyprus, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Palestinian territories, Syria, and Turkey'.
