Lamarkizm, bir organizmanın ömrü boyunca edindiği özellikleri, yavrularına aktarabileceği fikridir. Fransız biyolog Jean-Baptiste Lamarck'a göre, evrim teorilerine yumuşak miras eylemini dahil etmiştir; bu kavramlar, organları sürekli paralel olarak daha fazla karmaşıklığa doğru sürükleyen doğal yok olma eğilimi kavramına ek olarak yok olmamış ayrı soylar olarak eklemiştir. Lamarck, organizmaların ömrü boyunca bireysel çabaların, adaptif değişiklikleri alıp yavrulara geçeceği varsayıldığı için, türlerin adaptasyona yönlendiren ana mekanizma olduğunu önermek üzere yumuşak miras fikrinden kaynaklanmadı. Charles Darwin evrim teorisini doğal seleksiyon yoluyla Türlerin Kökeni Üzerine yayınladığında, "mirasın kullanımı ve kullanmaması" na itimat etmeye devam etti, ancak Lamarck'ın teorilerinin diğer yönlerini reddetti. Daha sonra, Mendel genetiği, kazanılan özelliklerin kalıtımı kavramını değiştirdi ve sonunda modern evrim sentezinin geliştirilmesine ve Lamarckian biyolojide evrim teorisinin genel olarak terk edilmesine yol açtı.
