Neoplatonizm, MS 3. yüzyılda ortaya çıkmış ve MS 529'da Atina'daki Platonik Akademinin kapatıldıktan kısa süre sonra Justinian I tarafından felsefe geleneğini belirlemek için kullanılan modern bir terimdir. Neoplatoistler hem Platon hem de Platonik tarafından büyük ölçüde etkilenmiştir altı yüzyıl boyunca gelişen ve Neoplatonistlerin birincisini Platon'tan ayıran bir gelenek. Kolektif olarak Neoplatoistler, Plotinus'tan başlayan sürekli bir filozof geleneği oluşturdu. Sonraki Neoplatonistler tarafından da ele geçirilen Plotinus sisteminin karakteristik özelliklerinden biri, ötesinde "Bir" doktrinidir. Plotinus için, gerçekliğin ilk ilkesi, varolan şeylerin yaratıcı kaynağı ve teleolojik sonu olan tamamen basit, ulaşılmaz, bilinemeyen geçimdir.
