Sinir ajanları sinirlerin organlara mesaj gönderi mekanizmasını bozan fosfor içeren organik kimyasalların bir sınıfıdır. Parçalanma asetilkolinesterazın, normalde asetilkolini yok eden bir enzim, bir nörotransmitterin engellenmesinden kaynaklanır. Birleşmiş Milletler 687 sayılı Karar gereğince kimyasal silah olarak kitle imha silahları olarak sınıflandırılmışlar ve 1993 yılı Kimyasal Silahlar Konvansiyonu ile üretim ve stoklanmaları yasaklanmıştır; Kimyasal Silahlar Konvansiyonu 29 Nisan 1997'de resmi olarak yürürlüğe girdi. 1899 ve 1907 Lahey Sözleşmelerinde ve 1925 tarihli Cenevre Sözleşmesi'nde tehlikeli gazların kullanılması savaşta yasaklandı. Bir sinir ajanının zehirlenmesi, öğrencilerin kasılmalarına, aşırı salivasyon, konvülsiyonlar, istemsiz idrara çıkma ve defekasyon ve solunum kasları üzerinde kontrol kaybedildiğinde boğulma yoluyla ölüm gerçekleşir. Bazı sinir ajanları kolayca buharlaşır veya aerosol haline getirilir ve vücuda giren birincil portal solunum sistemi olur.
