Soyut sanat dünyadaki görsel referanslardan bir derece bağımsızlık derecesinde varolan bir kompozisyon oluşturmak için form, renk ve çizgiden oluşan görsel bir dil kullanır. Batı sanatı, Rönesans'tan 19. yüzyılın ortalarına kadar perspektif mantığı ve görünür bir gerçeklik yanılsamasını yeniden üretme girişimiyle desteklenmişti. Avrupa dışındaki kültür sanatları erişilebilir hale geldiler ve görsel tecrübeyi sanatçıya anlatmanın alternatif yollarını gösterdiler. 19. yüzyılın sonuna kadar pek çok sanatçı, teknolojide, bilimde ve felsefede meydana gelen köklü değişimleri içine alan yeni bir sanat türü yaratma ihtiyacı hissetti. Bireysel sanatçıların teorik argümanlarını çizdikleri kaynaklar farklıydı ve o sırada Batı kültürünün her alanında sosyal ve entelektüel meşguliyetleri yansıtıyordu. Soyut sanat, gayri-figüratif sanat, objektif olmayan sanat ve gösterişsiz sanat gevşek ilişkili terimlerdir. Bunlar benzer, fakat belki de aynı özdeş anlamda değiller. Soyutlama, sanatta görüntü tasvirinde gerçeklikten sapmayı belirtir. Doğru gösterimden bu sapma hafif, kısmi veya eksik olabilir.
