Nükleasyon, bir çekirdeği oluşturma süreci. Kristalizasyonda başlangıç süreci budur. Çekirdeklenme, ayrı bir termodinamik evrenin son derece lokalize tomurcuklanmasıdır. İyonların, atomların veya moleküllerin, kristalin bir katı özelliğine sahip bir düzen içinde kendilerini düzenledikleri, kristal büyüdükçe ek parçacıkların çökeldiği bir alan oluşturan süreçtir. Sıvılarda çekirdeklenme yoluyla oluşabilecek bazı faz evreleri, gaz halindeki kabarcıklar, kristaller veya camsı bölgelerdir. Doymuş buharda sıvı damlacıkların yaratılması da çekirdeklenme ile karakterizedir. Kristal, amorf ve hatta boşluk kümelerinin katı maddelerin nükleasyonu, örneğin yarıiletken endüstrisi için de önemlidir. Çoğu çekirdeklenme süreci kimyasal olmaktan ziyade fiziksel ancak bazı istisnalar var. Buna iyi bir örnek ünlü Diyet Kok ve Mentos patlamasıdır. Nükleasyon genellikle sıvı veya buharla temas eden yüzeylerdeki çekirdeklenme bölgelerinde meydana gelir. Askıdaki parçacıklar veya dakika kabarcıkları da çekirdeklenme bölgeleri sağlar. Buna heterojen çekirdeklenme denir. Tercihen çekirdeklenme alanları olmaksızın nükleasyon, homojen çekirdeklenme olmaktadır.
