Nükleoid, genetik materyalin tümünü ya da çoğunu içeren bir prokaryotun hücresi içindeki düzensiz şekilli bir bölgedir. Bir ökaryotik hücrenin çekirdeğinin aksine, nükleer bir zarla çevrilmez. Prokaryotik organizmaların genomu genellikle dairesel, çift sarmallı bir DNA parçasıdır ve bu DNA'nın her hangi bir anda birden fazla kopyası var olabilir. Bir genomun uzunluğu değişir, ancak genel olarak en azından birkaç milyon baz çiftidir.
