Sayısal kontrol, elle tekerler ya da manivela ile manuel olarak kontrol edilmekten ziyade bir depolama ortamında kodlanmış tam programlanmış komutlarla çalıştırılan ya da tek başına camlar aracılığıyla mekanik olarak otomatikleştirilen takım tezgahlarının otomasyonu. Çoğu NC bugün, bilgisayarların kontrolün ayrılmaz bir parçası olan bilgisayar sayısal kontrolüdür. Modern CNC sistemlerinde uçtan uca bileşen tasarımı, bilgisayar destekli tasarım ve bilgisayar destekli imalat programları kullanılarak son derece otomatik hale getirilmiştir. Programlar, bir post-işlemci aracılığıyla belirli bir makineyi çalıştırmak için gerekli komutları çıkaracak şekilde yorumlanan ve daha sonra üretim için CNC makinelerine yüklenen bir bilgisayar dosyası üretir.
