Nyctalopia
Gece körlüğü olarak da adlandırılan Nyctalopia nispeten düşük ışıkta görmek zor veya imkansız hale getiren bir durumdur. Birkaç göz hastalığının bir belirtisidir. Gece körlüğü doğumdan ya da yaralanma ya da yetersiz beslenmeden kaynaklanıyor olabilir. Karanlığa yetersiz uyum olarak tanımlanabilir. Nyctalopia'nın en yaygın nedeni, retinadaki rod hücrelerinin ışığa cevap verme yeteneklerini yavaş yavaş kaybettiği bir rahatsızlık olan retinitis pigmentosa'dır. Bu genetik durumdan mustarip hastalar ilerleyici niktalopiye sahiptir ve nihayetinde gündüz görüşleri de etkilenebilir. X bağlantılı konjenital sabit gece körlüğü, doğumdan itibaren çubuklar ya hiç çalışmaz ya da çok az çalışır, ancak durum kötüleşmez. Gece körlüğünün diğer bir nedeni, balık yağları, karaciğer ve süt ürünlerinde bulunan retinol veya A vitamini eksikliğidir. Karşıt problem, parlak ışığın görülmemesi, hemeralopia olarak bilinir ve daha seyrektir. Retinanın dış bölgesi konilerden daha fazla çubuktan oluştuğundan, periferik görme kaybı genellikle gece körlüğüne neden olur.
