Onkogen
Bir onkojen, kansere neden olma potansiyeline sahip bir gentir. Tümör hücrelerinde genellikle yüksek seviyelerde mutasyon geçirilir veya eksprese edilir. Çoğu normal hücrenin programlanmış bir ölüm şekli geçer. Aktive edilmiş onkojenler, apoptoz için belirlenmiş hücrelerin hayatta kalmasına ve bunun yerine çoğalmasına neden olabilir. Çoğu onkojen, başka bir genin mutasyonları ya da kansere neden olan viral enfeksiyon gibi çevresel faktörler gibi ek bir adım gerektirir. 1970'lerden bu yana, insan kanserinde onlarca kanser teşhis edildi.
