Genetikte, bir operon, tek bir promotörün kontrolü altındaki bir grup gen içeren genomik DNA'nın işleyen bir birimi. Genler, ayrı olarak çevrilen monokistronik mRNA'lar oluşturmak üzere, yani her biri tek bir gen ürününü kodlayan birkaç mRNA dizisi oluşturmak için birlikte bir mRNA şeridine ve birlikte sitoplazmada tercüme edilir veya trans-splicing işlemine tabi tutulur. Bunun sonucunda operon içerisindeki genler birlikte ifade edilir ya da hiç ifade edilmez. Bir operonu tanımlamak için birçok gen birlikte transkripsiyon yapılmalıdır. Başlangıçta, operonların yalnızca prokaryotlarda olduğu düşünülüyordu, ancak 1990'ların başında ökaryotlarda ilk operonların bulunmasından bu yana, daha önce varsaydığından daha yaygın olduklarını ileri süren daha fazla kanıt ortaya çıktı. Genellikle, prokaryotik operonların ekspresyonu polisistronik mRNA'ların üretilmesine yol açarken, ökaryotik operonlar monokistronik mRNA'lara yol açar. Operonlar ayrıca bakteriyofajlar gibi virüslerde bulunur.
