Optofon
Optofon, kör tarafından kullanılan, harfi belirlemek için metinleri tarayan ve zamanla değişen ton ses tonları üreten bir cihazdır. Bilinen en eski bilinen uygulamalarından biridir. Birmingham Üniversitesi'nden Dr. Edmund Fournier d'Albe, 1913 yılında selenyum fotosensörlerini kullanarak siyah baskıyı algılayan ve bunu kör bir kişi tarafından yorumlanabilecek sesli bir çıktı haline getiren optofonayı icat etti. Barr ve Stroud, cihazın çözünürlüğünü ve kullanılabilirliğini iyileştirmeye katıldı. Sadece birkaç ünite inşa edildi ve başlangıçta okumak çok yavaş oldu; 1918 Sergisinde bir gösteri Mary Jameson'un dakikada bir kelime okuduğunu söyledi. Optophone'ın daha sonraki modellerinde dakika başına 60 sözcüğün hızına izin verilmiş olsa da yalnızca bazı konular bu orana erişebilmektedir.
