Oralizm, 1860'lı yılların sonlarında Birleşik Devletlerde popüler kullanıma girdi; Northampton'daki Clarke İşitme Engelliler Okulu, Massachusetts bu şekilde öğretime başlamak için ilk okul oldu, 1867'de.
