Aşırı avlanma
Aşırı avlanma, su gövdesi büyüklüğüne bakılmaksızın, balık stoklarının kabul edilemez seviyelere kadar tükendiği aşırı kullanım biçimidir. Kaynak yetersizliği, düşük biyolojik büyüme oranları ve kritik derecede düşük biyokütle seviyeleri aşırı avlanma kaynaklanmaktadır. Örneğin köpekbalıklarının aşırı avlanması, tüm deniz ekosistemlerinin üzülmesine yol açmıştır. Bir balıkçılığın aşırı balık avından kurtarma yeteneği, ekosistemin koşullarının iyileşme için uygun olup olmadığına bağlıdır. Türlerin kompozisyonundaki dramatik değişiklikler, diğer denge enerji akışlarının, orijinal balık stokunun tükenmesinden önce mevcut olanlardan farklı tür kompozisyonları içerdiği bir ekosistem kaymasına neden olabilir. Örneğin, bir kez alabalık yetersiz avlandığında, sazan alabalığın yetiştirme popülasyonunu yeniden kurmasını imkansız hale getirebilir.
