Bir pegmatit, genellikle 2.5 cm'den büyük, birbirine kenetlenen faneritik kristallerden oluşan bir Holokristalin, müdahaleci mağmatik kayaçtır; Bu kayaçlara pegmatitik denir. Çoğu pegmatit, kuvartz, feldispat ve mika'dan oluşur ve granit gibi benzer bir temel bileşime sahiptir. Amfibol, Ca-plajiyoklaz feldispat, piroksen, feldispatoidler ve diğer olağandışı mineralleri içeren daha nadir ara bileşim ve mafik pegmatitler bilinmektedir ve rekristalize bölgelerde ve büyük katmanlı intrüzyonlarla ilişkili apofizlerde bulunur. Kristal boyutu pegmatitlerin en belirgin özelliğidir ve genellikle 5 cm'den büyük kristallerdir. Karşıdan 10 metre uzaktaki bireysel kristaller bulundu ve dünyanın en büyük kristallerinin çoğu pegmatitlerde bulundu. Bunlar, spodümen, mikroklin, beril ve turmalin içerir. Benzer şekilde, pegmatitik kaya içindeki kristal dokusu ve formu aşırı büyüklük ve mükemmelliğe götürülebilir. Bir pegmatit içindeki feldispat, abartılı ve mükemmel eşleştirme, eksolüsyon tabakaları gösterebilir ve sulu kristalleşme ile etkilenince makroskale grafik dokusu bilinir; feldispat ve kuvartz birleşir.
