Bir performans göstergesi veya önemli performans göstergesi bir tür performans ölçümüdür. Bir kuruluş, KPI'yı başarısını değerlendirmek ya da nişanlı olduğu belli bir etkinliğin başarısını değerlendirmek için kullanabilir. Bazen başarı, stratejik hedefler doğrultusunda ilerleme kaydetmek için tanımlanır, ancak başarmak, basitçe, bir takım operasyonel hedeflerin tekrarlanan, periyodik başarısıdır. Buna göre, doğru KPI'ları seçmek, kuruluş için neyin önemli olduğunu iyi bir şekilde kavrar. 'Önemlidir', genellikle performansı ölçen departmana bağlıdır - ör. Finanse etmek için yararlı KPI'ler satışlara ayrılan KPI'lerden oldukça farklı olacaktır.
