Periklas, kontakt metamorfik kayaçlarda doğal olarak bulunur ve en temel refrakter tuğlaların önemli bir bileşenidir. Bu magnezyum oksitin kübik bir şeklidir. İlk önce 1840 yılında tanımlanmış ve Yunan περικλάω'dan, bölünme ile ilgili olarak isimlendirilmiştir. Tip lokalitesi Monte Somma, Somma-Vezüv Kompleksi, Napoli Eyaleti, Campania, İtalya'dır. Maden için eski dönem magnezyumdur. Antik Anadolu'da Magnesia bölgesinden gelen taşlar hem demir oksitler hem de magnezyum oksit ve hidratlı magnezyum karbonat içermektedir. Dolayısıyla, antik Çağ'da Magnesia'dan Taşlar denilen olağandışı manyetik özellikleriyle bu taşlar mıknatıs ve manyetizma kavramlarının ortaya çıkmasının nedeni olmuştur. Periklas genelde dolomitik kireç taşlarının metamorfizması tarafından üretilen mermerde bulunur. Yakın yüzey koşulları altında brucite'ı kolayca değiştirir. Tip lokalitesine ek olarak, Predazzo, Tyrol, Avusturya'dan bildirilmiştir; Carlingford, County Louth, İrlanda; Broadford, Skye ve Muck Adası, İskoçya; León, İspanya; Bellerberg yanardağ, Eifel bölgesi, Almanya; Nordmark ve Långban, Varmland, İsveç; ve Kopeysk, güney Ural Dağları, Rusya.
