Petrografi, kayaların ayrıntılı tanımlamalarına odaklanan bir petrografik dalıdır. Petrografiyi inceleyen bir kişiye petrografi denir. Kayadaki mineral içeriği ve dokusal ilişkiler ayrıntılı olarak açıklanmıştır. Petrografik tanımlar, mostradaki alan notlarıyla başlar ve el numunelerinin megaskopik tanımını içerir. Bununla birlikte, petrografi için en önemli araç petrografik mikroskoptur. İnce kesitteki optik mineraloji ile minerallerin detaylı analizi ve mikro doku ve yapı kaya kökenini anlamak için kritik önem taşır. Modern bir petrografik laboratuarda, bireysel tahılların elektron mikroprob analizinin yanı sıra, atomik absorpsiyon veya X-ışını floresansıyla tüm kaya kimyasal analizi de kullanılır.
