Fonasyon terimi, fonetik alanına bağlı olarak biraz farklı anlamlara sahiptir. Bazı fonetikçiler arasında fonasyon, vokal kıvrımların yarı-periyodik titreşim yoluyla belirli sesler üretme sürecidir. Larinks anatomisi ve fizyoloji ve konuşma üretimini genel olarak inceleyenler arasında kullanılan tanım budur.
