Bir plasmoid plazma ve manyetik alanların tutarlı bir yapıdadır. Plasmoidler, top şimşekliği, manyetosferdeki manyetik kabarcıklar ve kuyruklu kuyruklu nesneler, güneş rüzgarları, güneş atmosferi ve heliosfer akım çizelgesi gibi doğal olayları açıklamak için önerildi. Laboratuarda üretilen plazmidler, alan ters konfigürasyonları, sferomaklar ve yoğun plazma odaklan içerir. Plazmoid kelimesi 1956'da Winston H. Bostick tarafından "plazma-manyetik varlık" demek için kullanılmıştır: Plazma, amorf bir blob olarak değil, torus formunda yayıldı. Bu toroidal yapıyı bir plasmoid, yani plazma-manyetik varlık anlamına gelen bir kelime olarak adlandırmanın özgürlüğünü alacağız. Plasmoid kelimesi tüm plazma-manyetik varlıkların genel bir terimi olarak kullanılacaktır.
