Plovers, Charadriinae altfamanna ait kuşların kuşatma gruplarından biridir. Altfamilyada yaklaşık 66 tür vardır, bunların çoğu "yonca" veya "soytarı" olarak adlandırılır. Yakın ilişkili lapwing alt ailesi Vanellinae, başka bir 20 türden oluşur. Plalar, Sahara ve kutup bölgeleri hariç tüm dünyada bulunur ve nispeten kısa faturalarla karakterizedir. Snipes gibi daha uzun faturalı kanatçıklar gibi hissederek değil, görerek avlanırlar. Bunlar başta diğer bazı kara gruplarının istikrarlı problanması yerine, çalışma ve duraklama tekniği ile elde edilmiş habitata bağlı olarak esas olarak böcekler, solucanlar veya diğer omurgasız hayvanlar üzerinde beslenirler. Kuşların soytarı grubu, yanlış brooding olarak sınıflandırılmış, pozisyon değiştirmeye cüret ederek hayali bir yuva sitesinde oturmak üzere dikkat dağıtıcı bir ekrana sahiptir. Bir grup plovers bir stand, kanat veya cemaat olarak anılabilir. Bir grup dotterel gezisi olarak anılabilir.
