Polybius
Polybius, M.Ö. 264-146 dönemini ayrıntılı olarak ele alan "The Histories" adlı eserinde kaydettiği Helenistik Dönem Yunan tarihçisidir. İş, Roma Cumhuriyeti'nin 'dünya gücü' ne yükselişini anlatıyor. Polybius, daha sonra Montesquieu'nun Yasaların Ruhu'nda ve Birleşik Devletler Anayasasının taslağının hazırlanmasında hükümetteki güçlerin ayrılmasıyla ilgili fikirleri ile ünlüdür. Polybius M.Ö. 200 civarında Arcadia'da dünyaya geldi. Achaean Ligi Süvari Komutanı olan Yunan siyasetçisi Lycortas'ın oğluydu. Babasının Makedonya'nın Roma kontrolüne muhalefeti hapis cezasına çarptırıldı. Polybius, daha sonra, Lucius Aemilius Paulus'un iki oğlu eğitmek için onu çalıştırdığı Roma'ya gönderildi. Polybius M.Ö. 152'de Makedonya'ya dönme fırsatı buldu; Ancak Roma'da kalmaya karar verdi, çünkü o zamana kadar Roma Cumhuriyeti'ne sadakatini koymuştu. General'e Hispania ve Afrika'ya eşlik eden Roma askeri komutanı Scipio Aemilianus'un yakın arkadaşı oldu.
