Operasyonel olmayan ilk değirmenden kalan en eski örnek, 1612'de inşa edilen Cambridgeshire'deki Great Gransden'da bulunabilir. Tasarımları ve kullanımları 18. ve 19. yüzyıllarda zirve yapmış ve daha sonra yüksek hızlı buharlı freze makineleri. Günümüzde çoğunlukla Kuzey Avrupa'da ve İngiltere'de bulunan birçok kişi bulunmaktadır.
