Post-yapısalcılık, Amerikalı akademisyenler tarafından, 20. yüzyılın ortalarında Fransız ve kıtasal filozofların ve eleştirel teorisyenlerin, 1960'lı ve 70li yıllarda uluslararası öneme sahip olan bir dizi heterojen eseri göstermek için formüle edilmiş bir etikettir. Postyapısalcılığın önemli bir teması, insanoğlunun kendilerinin karmaşıklığı ve onları incelemek için yapıların tamamen kaçması imkansızlığından dolayı insan bilimlerindeki istikrarsızlıktır. Post-yapısalcılık, yapısalcılık için bir yanıttır. Yapısalcılık, 20. yüzyılın başlarından ortalarına kadar Avrupa'da gelişmiş bir entelektüel harekettir. İnsan kültürünün, somut gerçeklerden ve soyut fikirlerden farklı olan bir dille modellenmiş bir yapı vasıtasıyla anlaşılabileceğini savunuyordu; ikisi arasında aracılık eden bir "üçüncü düzen". Post-yapısalcı yazarlar, yapısalcılık için farklı eleştiriler mevcut, ancak ortak temalar, yapısalcılığın öngördüğü yapıların kendi kendine yeterliliğini reddetmek ve bu yapıları oluşturan ikili karşıtlıkların sorgulanmasını içerir.
