Bir puzolan, kendi başına çimento değerine sahip olmadığı veya hiç olmadığı ancak ince bölünmüş halde ve suyun varlığında çimento özelliklerine sahip bileşikleri oluşturmak üzere sıradan bir sıcaklıkta kalsiyum hidroksit ile kimyasal reaksiyona giren silisli veya silisli ve alüminyum bir materyaldir . Bir pozzolanın geniş tanımı, maddenin kökeni üzerinde hiçbir etkiye sahip değil, yalnızca kalsiyum hidroksit ve su ile reaksiyona girme kabiliyetine katkıda bulunuyor.
