Biyolojide, precosyal terim, gençlerin nispeten olgunlaştığı ve doğumdan veya kuluçka anından itibaren hareket ettiği türlere atıfta bulunur. Karşı gelişim stratejisine "altıncı" denir; burada gençler çaresiz olarak doğar veya doğarlar. Son derece ön tanımlı türlere "süper-sosyal" denilebilir. Bu üç kategori, aralarında belirgin boşluklar olmaksızın bir süreklilik oluşturmaktadır. Doğumsal türler normalde nidifuadır, yani doğumdan veya kuluçkadan çıktıktan kısa bir süre sonra yuvadan ayrıldıkları anlamına gelir. Öncesi ve altıncı türler arasındaki mesafe kuşlarda özellikle geniştir. Önceden yaşlı kuşlar gözleri doğarlarken doğarlar. Kuluçka yapıldıktan sonra yakında yetişkin tüyleri bulan tüyleri ile örtülürler. Bu türden kuşlar, doğumlarından sonra, kuşlar gibi diğer kuşlara oranla çok daha erken yüzebilirler. Çok ön tanımlı kuşlar, kuluçkalamayı takiben yuvayı kısa bir süre bırakmaya hazır olabilirler. Birçok prezervatif civciv, termoregülasyondan bağımsız değildir ve katılan ebeveynleri kısa bir süre vücut ısısı ile kuluçkaya yatırırlar. Önceden yaşlı kuşlar kendi yiyeceklerini bulur, bazen de ebeveynlerden yardım veya talimat verirler.
