Sözcük, bir provaköre ya da acenteye devredilen yetkiye ya da yetkiye olduğu kadar, sıklıkla dava yoluyla ya da kısa bir süre pro ile ifade edilen bu yetkinin uygulanması için de uygulanır ya da sadece p.p. Her procurationem için ortak bir kullanım, genellikle başka bir kişi adına imzalanan ticari mektuplarda görülür. Procuratio, "pro" ve "cura" kelimeleri ile ilgilidir. Dolayısıyla, birisi yerine hareket ederek "ajans" anlamında çok yakındır.
