Tıpta ve biyolojide, bulaşıcı hastalık bulaşmış bir ev sahibi birey veya gruptan, bulaşıcı bir hastalığın, diğer bireye önceden bulaştırılmış olup olmadığına bakılmaksızın, belirli bir bireye veya gruba geçmesidir. Bazen bulaşma, daha önce enfekte edilmemiş bir ev sahibinin bulaşması anlamına gelir. Terim genellikle bir mikroorganizmanın doğrudan bir kişiden diğerine aşağıdaki araçlardan biriyle iletilmesini ifade eder: ▪ damla teması - başka bir kişide öksürme veya hapşırma ▪ doğrudan fiziksel temas - cinsel temas da dahil olmak üzere enfekte bir kişiye dokunma ▪ dolaylı fiziksel temas - genellikle toprak kirliliği veya kirli bir yüzeye dokunmak suretiyle ▪ hava yoluyla bulaşan iletim - mikroorganizma havada uzun süre kalabilirse ▪ dışkı yoluyla oral yolla bulaşma - genellikle kontamine olmuş gıda veya su kaynaklarından İletim ayrıca başka bir organizma yoluyla dolaylı da olabilir bir vektör veya bir ara konak. Dolaylı bulaşma, zoonozları veya daha genel olarak, daha karmaşık yaşam döngüleri olan makroparazitler gibi daha büyük patojeleri içerebilir.
