Eski Yunan πρό ve φάσις'dan gelen vazgeçilme, kromatinin kromozom denilen ve kromatin görünür hale gelen iki çubuk şeklinde yapılara yoğunlaştığı bir mitoz aşamesidir. Kromatin yoğunlaşması olarak adlandırılan bu süreç, yoğunlaştırma kompleksiyle ilgilidir. Genetik materyal, hücre döngüsünün önceki ara evrelerinde çoğaltıldığından, hücredeki her kromozomun iki özdeş kopyası vardır. Bu kopyalara kardeş kromatitler denir ve her kromozomda bulunan centromere adlı bir DNA elementinde birbirlerine bağlanırlar. Ayrıca, proses esnasında, giemsa boyaması, kromozomlarda G-bantlamasını ortaya çıkarmak için uygulanabilir. Mitozda önemli bir organel, metazoanlardaki mikrotübül organizasyon merkezi olan centrosomdur. Protez sırasında, mitozdan bağımsız olarak kopyalanan iki centrosom, γ-tubulin alımı nedeniyle mikrotübül aktivitesini arttırdı. Santüsomlar, mikrotübüllere etki eden moleküler motorların hareketi ile hücre çekirdeğinin karşıt uçlarına itilir. Temelde, çekirdekteki kromatin, kromozomlara sarılır.
