Proto-Germen dili
Ortak Germen veya Ur-Germen olarak da bilinen Proto-Germen, İngilizce de dahil olmak üzere tüm Germen dillerinin, göz ardı edilmemiş, yeniden yapılandırılmış proto dalıdır. Tanımı gereği, Proto-Germen, onaylanmış Germen dillerinin en yeni ortak atasını oluşturan dinin evresidir. Proto-Germen, Proto-Indo-European'dan gelmektedir. Proto-Germen, dil gelişimindeki ağaç modelinde bir düğüm olarak yeniden yapılandırılmış olmasına rağmen, ana yenilikleri mantıksal ve bu nedenle kronolojik bir dizilim izlemiş olmalı ve tahminen yaklaşık bir bin yıllık yaşam süresi boyunca aşamalardan geçtiği hipotezine götürmüştür gelişme. Her aşama, ancak sonuncusu, ortak yeniliklerin hepsini değil bazılarını içermektedir. Dahası, son aşamalar ve belki de ilk, zaten lehçelere ayrılmıştı, bazıları karşılıklı anlaşmazlık noktasında başlayan farklı dillere yol açıyordu.
