Protoplazma
Protoplasm, bir plazma zarının çevrelediği bir hücrenin canlı içeriğidir. Sitoplazmada genel bir terimdir. Protoplasm, iyonlar, amino asitler, monosakkaritler ve su gibi küçük moleküllerin ve nükleik asitler, proteinler, lipidler ve polisakkaritler gibi makromoleküllerden oluşan bir karışımdan oluşur. Ökaryotlarda hücre çekirdeğini çevreleyen protoplazma sitoplazma olarak bilinir ve çekirdek içinde çekirdekoplazma olarak bulunur. Prokaryotlarda plazma zarının içerisindeki materyal bakteri sitoplazmasıdır, Gram-negatif bakterilerde ise plazma membranının dışındaki bölge, ancak dış zarın içindeki bölge periplazmdır. "Protoplazma" sözcüğü ilk önce Yunan protosundan gelir ve oluşacak şey için plazma oluşur. İlk önce 1846 yılında Hugo Von Mohl tarafından bitki hücreleri içindeki "sert, süngerimsi, granül, yarı sıvı" maddeyi hücre duvarı, hücre çekirdeği ve vakuol içindeki hücre özden ayıran özelliklerini tanımlamak için kullanıldı. Thomas Huxley daha sonra ona "yaşamın fiziksel temeli" olarak değindi ve yaşam özelliğinin moleküllerin bu madde içinde dağılımından kaynaklandığını düşünüyordu.
