Bağıl yoğunluk
Bağıl yoğunluk veya özgül yerçekimi, bir maddenin yoğunluğunun verilen bir referans malzemenin yoğunluğuna oranıdır. Özgül ağırlık suya göre nispi yoğunluk demektir. "Bağıl yoğunluk" terimi, modern bilimsel kullanımda sıklıkla tercih edilmektedir. Bir maddenin nispi yoğunluğu birden az ise, referanstan daha az yoğun olur; 1'den büyükse referansdan daha yoğun olur. Bağıl yoğunluk tam 1 ise, yoğunluklar eşittir; yani, iki maddenin eşit hacimleri aynı kütleye sahiptir. Referans malzeme su ise, göreceli yoğunluğu 1'den az olan bir madde suda yüzer. Örneğin, görece yoğunluğu yaklaşık 0.91 olan bir buz küpü yüzer. Bağıl yoğunluğu 1'den büyük olan bir madde batar. Hem numune hem de referans için sıcaklık ve basınç belirtilmelidir. Basınç neredeyse daima 1 atm 101.325 kPa'ya eşittir. Değilse yoğunluğu doğrudan belirtmek daha normaldir. Hem örnek hem de referans için sıcaklık sanayiden sanayiye değişir. İngiliz biracılık uygulamasında yukarıda belirtilen özgül ağırlık 1000 ile çarpılır.
