Akılcılık, gerçeklere ya da akıllara dayanan makul olmanın niteliğidir ya da devlettir. Akılcılık, kişinin inançlarına, inanma nedenleriyle veya kişinin eylem gerekçesiyle eylemlerinin uygunluğunu ifade eder. "Akılcılık" ekonomi, sosyoloji, psikoloji, evrimsel biyoloji ve siyaset bilimlerinde farklı özel anlamlara sahiptir. Akılcı bir karar yalnızca gerekçeli değildir, ancak bir hedefe ulaşmak veya bir problemi çözmek için de idealdir. Rasyonel davranış için optimalliği belirlemek, sorunun niceliksel bir formülasyonunu ve birkaç temel varsayımı gerektirir. Hedef veya problem bir karar vermeyi içerdiğinde, rasyonellik, mevcut bilginin miktarını belirtir. Toplu olarak, formülasyon ve arka plan varsayımları, rasyonelliğin uygulandığı modeldir.
