Ağacın tabanında kabuk kalın ve gri-kahverengi, ancak üst taçta ince, pütürsüz ve parlak turuncu-kırmızı; ağacın adı bu ayırıcı karakterden kaynaklanır. Kabuğun çatlaklarında bazı kırmızı renkler görülebilir. Kızılçam kendinden budama işlemidir; ağaçlarda ölü dallar olmamaya eğilimlidir ve yaşlı ağaçların gölgelikin altında çok uzun uzunlukta dalsız gövde olabilir. Yapraklar, iğne gibi, koyu yeşil, iki fasikülde, 12-18 cm uzunluğunda ve gevrektir.
