Referans çalışması, doğrulanmış gerçekler için başvurulabilecek bir kitap veya seri yayındır. Bilgilerin, gerektiğinde hızlı bir şekilde bulunması amaçlanmıştır. Başvuru çalışmalarına, baştan sona okunmak yerine, genellikle belirli bilgi parçaları için atıfta bulunur. Bu eserlerin yazım tarzı bilgilendirici niteliktedir; yazarlar ilk kişinin kullanımından kaçınır ve gerçekleri vurgular. Birçok referans işi, çalışmaları bireysel bir yazar yerine bir veya daha fazla editör tarafından koordine edilen katkıda bulunan bir ekip tarafından derlenir.
