Neo-Lutheranizm, Lutheranizm içerisinde 19. yüzyılda canlanan bir harekettir ve Pietist Erweckung veya Uyanış ile başlar ve teolojik rasyonalizme ve pietizme karşı tepki olarak gelişir. Bu hareket Eski Lutheran hareketini izledi ve Lutheran kimliklerinin, daha geniş bir Hıristiyan topluluğunda ayrı bir grup olarak tekrar ortaya çıkmasına odaklandı ve Lutheran İmanları'nın temel bir Lutheran doktrin kaynağı olan yenilenerek odaklandı. Bu değişikliklerle birleşince, İngiltere'deki Anglo-Katolikliğin büyümesine paralel geleneksel doktrin ve lütufculuk üzerinde yeni bir odak noktası oldu. Hatta bazen "Alman Puseyism" deniyordu. Almanya'daki Roma Katolik Kilisesinde, neo-lüteriyen, Johann Adam Möhler tarafından paralelleştirildi. Neo-Lutheranizm'in başlıca edebi organı Evangelische Kirchenzeitung, Ernst Wilhelm Hengstenberg tarafından düzenlendi.
