İkinci Dünya Savaşı sırasında direnen hareketler, işgal edilmemiş her ülkede, işbirliği yapmayan, dezenformasyon ve propagandadan çökertilen pilotların gizlenmesine kadar, hatta tamamen savaşa ve kentlerin yeniden ele geçirilmesine kadar çeşitli yollarla gerçekleşti. Birçok ülkede direniş hareketleri bazen Yeraltı olarak da adlandırılmaktadır. En dikkat çeken direniş hareketleri arasında Yugoslav Partizanları, Polonya Ev Ordusu, Sovyet partizanları, Fransız Direnişi, İtalyan CLN, Norveç Direnişi, Yunan Direnişi ve Hollanda Direnişi vardı. Birçok ülke Mihver işgalcilere karşı savaşmaya direniş hareketleri yaptı ve Almanya'nın kendisinde de bir Nazi karşıtı hareketi vardı. İngiltere savaş sırasında işgal edilmemiş olmasına rağmen İngilizler, bir Alman istilası durumunda İngiliz Yardım Harekatları (Auxiliary Units) adı verilen bir direniş hareketi için hazırlık yaptılar. İngiliz kuruluşu ve Amerikan OSS gibi yabancı direniş hücreleri kurmak veya mevcut direniş hareketlerini desteklemek için çeşitli organizasyonlar da kuruldu. Müttefik işgalcilere karşı direniş hareketleri de vardı.
