İkinci bir mate veya ikinci subay, İdare tarafından verilen Second Mates Yetkinlik Sertifikası taşıyan bir ticari geminin güverte bölümünün lisanslı bir üyesidir. İkinci eş, komutanın üçüncü üyesidir ve genelde geminin seyirci olan bir bekçi görevlisi. Diğer görevler değişebilir, ancak ikinci eş genellikle sağlık görevlisi olup, tehlike sinyalizasyon ekipmanlarının bakımından sorumludur. Petrol tankerleri üzerinde, ikinci eş, genelde ana ortağa tank temizliği operasyonlarına yardımcı olur. Seyirci rolü, geminin geçiş planlarının oluşturulması üzerine odaklanmaktadır. Geçiş planı, yolculuğun yatmadan rıhtıma nasıl geçeceği konusunda geniş kapsamlı, adım adım bir açıklamadır.
