Susam
Susam, Sesamum cinsi çiçekli bir bitkidir. Afrika'da çok sayıda vahşi akraba var ve Hindistan'da daha az sayıda vahşi akraba var. Dünyadaki tropik bölgelerde yaygın olarak vatandaşlık kazanır ve bakla yetişen yenilebilir tohumları için yetiştirilir. Susam tohumu bilinen 3000 yıl önce evcilleştirilmiş en eski yağlı tohumlu mahsullerden biridir. Bölgedeki susam yağı için birçok eski basının keşfedilmesiyle ispatlandığı gibi, Orta Doğu'da binlerce yıldır önemli bir yaz mahsulü idi. Susam kuraklığa dayanıklıdır ve diğer ürünlerin başarısız olduğu yerlerde yetişebilmektedir. Susam, herhangi bir tohumun en yüksek yağ içeriğinden birine sahiptir. Zengin bir çatlak lezzetiyle, dünya genelindeki mutfaklarda ortak bir içeriktir. Diğer fındık ve gıdalar gibi, bazı insanlarda alerjik reaksiyonları tetikleyebilir. 2010 yılında dünyada 3.84 milyon ton susam tohumu toplandı. 2010 yılında en büyük susam tohumu üreticisi Burma idi. Dünyanın en büyük susam tohumu ihracatçısı Hindistan ve Japonya en büyük ithalatçısıydı.
