Shellac, Hindistan ve Tayland ormanlarındaki ağaç lac böceklerinden salgılanan bir reçinedir. İşlenmiş ve kuru gevrekler olarak satılır; bunlar, fırçalı renklendirici, gıda sırı ve ahşap kaplama olarak kullanılan sıvı gomalak yapmak için etanol içinde eritilir. Shellac zorlu bir doğal astar, zımpara macunu, tanen blokeri, koku engelleyici, leke ve parlak cila gibi işlev görür. Shellac bir zamanlar iyi izolasyon özelliklerine sahip olduğu için nemden kurtulması nedeniyle elektrikli uygulamalarda kullanılmıştır. 1950'li yıllarda batıda sona eren 78 rpm'lik kayıt döneminde fronograph da yapıldı. 19. yüzyılda petrol ve mum yüzeylerinin yerini aldığı andan itibaren, 1920'li ve 1930'lu yıllarda büyük oranda nitroselüloz cila ile kaplanan shellac, batı dünyasında hakim ahşap kaplamalarından biriydi.
