Bir kar tanesi, tek bir buz kristali veya Dünya'nın atmosferi boyunca düşen buz kristallerinin bir araya toplanmasıdır. Mikroskobik aşırı soğutulmuş bulut damlacıkları dondurulduğunda gelişen kar kristalleri gibi başlarlar. Kar taneleri çeşitli boyut ve şekiller alır. Farklı sıcaklık ve nem rejimlerinde pullar hareket ettiği için karmaşık şekiller ortaya çıkıyor; böylelikle bireysel kar taneleri yapıda neredeyse tamamen benziyor. Bunun nedeni, küçük kristal yüzleri tarafından tüm spektrum ışığının yaygın yansımasından kaynaklanmaktadır.
