Toprak bilimindeki solüsyon, aynı toprak oluşum koşullarına maruz kalan yüzey ve alt katmanlardan oluşur. Solunun tabanı nispeten tüylenmemiş ana materyaldir. Solum ve topraklar eşanlamlı değildir. Bazı topraklar, toprak oluşumundan etkilenmeyen katmanları içerir. Bu katmanlar solunun parçası değildir. Genetik ufukların sayısı birden çok kişiye değişir. Üzerinde 10 cm kalınlığa sahip bir ana tabaka olan bir yüzey tabakası kendi başına çözelti olabilir.
