Polinezya, Orta ve Güney Pasifik Okyanusuna dağılmış 1000'den fazla adadan oluşan Okyanusya'nın bir alt bölgesi. Polinezyalı adalarda yaşayan yerli halka Polinezyalılar denir ve dil, kültür ve inançlar gibi pek çok benzer özelliği paylaşırlar. Tarihsel olarak, deneyimli denizcilerdi ve gece boyunca gezinmek için yıldızları kullandılar. "Polinezya" terimi, ilk kez 1756'da Fransız yazar Charles de Brosses tarafından kullanıldı ve başlangıçta Pasifik'in tüm adalarına uygulandı. Jules Dumont d'Urville, 1831'de Paris Coğrafya Derneğine yaptığı bir konferans sırasında kullanımına ilişkin bir kısıtlama önerdi.
