Kısayolu, normal bir dil yazma yöntemine kıyasla yazım hızını ve kısaltmasını arttıran kısaltılmış bir sembolik yazı metodudur. Stenoya yazı yazma süreci, Yunan stenosları ve grafet veya grafiden stenoya kadar uzanıyor. Sıkıştırma veya yazma hızının hedeflenip amaçlanmadığına bağlı olarak Yunan arabaları ve tachygraphy'den brakiyografi de denilmektedir. Birçok biçimlendirme şekli mevcuttur. Tipik bir kısaltılmış sistem, sistemde iyi eğitim almış birinin insanların konuştuğu kadar çabuk yazmasına izin verebilecek kelimeler ve ortak ifadeler için semboller veya kısaltmalar sağlar. Kısaltma yöntemleri alfabe tabanlı olup farklı kısaltmalar kullanmaktadır. Bağımsız ya da metin editörlerine entegre birkaç otomatik tamamlama programı, kelime listelerine dayanarak, sık kullanılan cümleler için kısaltılmış bir işlev de içerir. Birçok gazeteci, basın konferanslarında veya diğer benzer senaryolarda not almak için kısa yazıları kullanır. Kayıtdışı geçmişte, kayıt ve dikte makineleri icat edilmeden önce daha yaygın şekilde kullanılmıştır.
