Stratus bulutu
Stratus bulutları, yükselen termallerden oluşan konvektif veya cumuliform bulutların aksine, düzgün bir tabana sahip yatay katmanlama ile karakterize edilen düşük seviyeli bir bulut türüdür. Daha spesifik olarak, stratus terimi, koyu gri ile neredeyse beyaz arasında değişen, düşük irtifalı düz, bulanık, özelliksiz bulutları tanımlamak için kullanılır. "Stratus" sözcüğü, "katman" anlamına gelen "strato-" Latince önekinden gelmektedir. Stratus bulutları hafif bir çiseleme veya az miktarda kar üretebilir. Bu bulutlar, sabah sisinin kaldırılmasıyla veya bir bölgenin üzerindeki düşük irtifalarda hareket eden soğuk havayla oluşan yerden büyük sislerdir. Bazıları sis benzeri bulut için bu bulutları "yüksek sis" olarak adlandırıyor. Hafif yağmur düşebilirken, bu bulut çok meteorolojik bir faaliyet göstermiyor.
