Streptokok
Streptococcus, Phylum Firmicutes ve laktik asit bakteri grubuna ait küresel Gram pozitif bakterilerin bir türüdür. Hücresel bölünme, bu bakterilerde tek bir eksende meydana gelir ve bu nedenle zincir veya çift gibi büyürler, bu nedenle adı Yunanca στρεπτός streptos'tan, yani zincir gibi kolayca bükülmüş veya bükülmüş anlamındadır. Bunun aksine, çoklu eksenler boyunca bölünen ve üzüm benzeri hücreler kümeleri üreten stafilokoklarla. Çoğu streptokok oksidaz ve katalaz negatiftir ve çoğu fakültatif anaeroblardır. 1984 yılında daha önce Streptococcus olarak düşünülen birçok organizma Enterococcus ve Lactococcus cinslerine ayrıldı. Şu anda 50'den fazla tür bu cins içinde tanınmaktadır.
