Esneklik, ilk önce Karl Polanyi'nin "ekonomi" teriminin iki anlamı olduğunu savunan Büyük Dönüşüm adlı eserinde önerdiği bir konumdur. Günümüzün neoklasik ekonomistleri tarafından kullanılan resmi anlam, iktisadın rasyonel eylem ve karar verme mantığı olarak, 'ekonomikleştirme', 'maksimize etme' veya 'optimize etme' gibi sınırlı araçların alternatif kullanımları arasında rasyonel bir seçim olduğu anlamına gelir. İkinci, asıl anlam ne akılcı karar verme ne de kıtlık koşullarını gerektirmez. Bu, insanların toplumsal ve doğal çevrelerinde nasıl bir yaşam etkileşimi içerisinde olduklarını gösterir. Bir toplumun geçim kaynağı stratejisi, çevreye ve maddi koşullara adaptasyon olarak görülmektedir; bu, fayda azamileştirmeyi içeren veya içermeyen bir süreçtir. "Ekonomi" nin esas anlamı "sağlama" anlamında görülür. Ekonomi, toplumun maddi ihtiyaçları karşılama biçimidir.
