Sistem, setin veya elemanlarının diğer elemanlara veya setlere olan ilişkilerinden farklı olan entegre bir bütün veya bir dizi eleman ve ilişki oluşturan etkileşimli veya birbirine bağlı bileşenler dizisidir. Her sistem mekansal ve zamansal sınırları ile çevrilidir ve çevresi tarafından etkilenir, yapısı ve amacı ile tanımlanır ve işlevselliği ile ifade edilir. Sistemlerin genel özelliklerini inceleyen alanlar arasında sistem bilimi, sistem teorisi, sistem mühendisliği, sibernetik, dinamik sistemler, termodinamik, karmaşık sistemler ve sistem analizi ve tasarımı yer alır. Alanların, maddelerin, türlerin veya zamansal ölçekten bağımsız kavram ve ilkelerin aranması için sistemlerin maddi ve organizasyonunun soyut özelliklerini araştırırlar. Bazı sistemler aşağıdakileri içeren ortak özellikleri paylaşmaktadır: ▪ Bir sistemin yapısı vardır; doğrudan veya dolaylı olarak birbiriyle ilişkili parçaları içerir; ▪ Bir sistem davranış gösterir, işlevini veya amacını yerine getiren süreçler sergiler; ▪ Bir sistemin birbirine bağlılığı vardır: parçalar ve süreçler yapısal ve / veya davranışsal ilişkilere bağlıdır.
